Tuesday Tasting – Great Lakes Commodore Perry IPA

Commodore Perry IPA

American IPAs are generally an aggressive, fragrant, hit-you-over-the-head with hops beer. But in England, the homeland of the historical IPA, the beer is more balanced with the malt to hop ratio. Great Lakes Brewing Company prefers to stay closer to the English side of the spectrum and make a more traditional IPA. Not to say this is a weak or flavorless beer though.

The aroma has a nice sweetness to it with a gentle herbal smell. A heavy dose of Simcoe, Cascade, and Fuggle hops help bitter the sweet malt profile without being overpowering.

Even at 7% ABV this is a great session beer that is well deserving of it’s 3 gold world beer medals.
